StrollerFit moms are getting healthier this summer with seafood!

SeaPakLogo_LtBkgrdsmall

Health and well-being shouldn’t take a vacation this summer, so lighten up your summertime meals with a few small changes, and those Bermuda shorts might be a little looser by Labor Day. Not only can healthier choices lead to lower body fat, decreasing our risk of heart disease, diabetes and a host of cancers, it can actually increase our brain power and strengthen our hearts, all with the power of seafood. Experts report that two servings of fish that are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids can reduce our risk of heart disease by 36%,.  Not reason enough to lighten-up? There’s more. DHA (an Omega 3) has been shown to slow the development of lesions on the brain which lead to Alzheimer’s disease. The brain and the body also benefit from an intake of seafood due to the mood lifting properties of Omega 3 fatty acids. In fact, some researchers believe Omega 3’s to be more powerful in reducing depression than some prescription drugs.  The health benefits of seafood are not limited to adults, positive effects on mood behavior and learning abilities have been seen in children with ADHD.

Happier and healthier are just two steps away this summer. Here are a few ideas to get you headed in the right direction. Switch-out that hamburger for a salmon burger, enjoy fish tacos with tilapia, cabbage and light ranch dressing, or let your little ones tear the lettuce while you prepare popcorn shrimp for a delicious summertime salad that’s anything but ordinary.

Worried about prep time or lack of recipes? Head to your local StrollerFit® powered by mommymuscle® class anytime between June 15th and July 15th to receive a Smarter Seafood Recipe booklet and coupons courtesy of SeaPak® Shrimp Company. For more information, log onto www.strollerfit.com.

StrollerFit moms unite to lose more than 534 pounds in four weeks and help feed families in need.

StrollerFit moms nationwide participated in a nutrition and fitness challenge to lose weight and get healthy for summer and swimsuit season.  The weight loss was pledged to the Biggest Loser’s Pound for Pound Challenge.  At the end of the four week challenge StrollerFit moms nationwide dropped more than 534 pounds as a group and on their behalf the Biggest Loser donated food to Feeding America.

The StrollerFit®mothers who participated received a 60 page nutrition and wellness book, which included a caloric and fitness goal breakdown for weight loss, a contract for participants to sign, a daily meal guide, caloric content chart (for over 200 popular foods), beginning/ending weight and measurement charts and seven weeks of 7 daily nutritional logs and weekly fitness trackers.  Some of the moms took advantage of a nutrition consultant offered via telephone.

“It just seemed like a great fit for us (to tie in the Biggest Loser’s Pound for Pound Challenge,” said Knight, “we wanted to offer our moms a nutrition tie in to our Love Your New Mom Body Workout that we do every spring with Babytalk magazine and adding the Pound for Pound Challenge portion really inspired our moms to get involved and do their best to help themselves and needy families nationwide during this tough economy.”

"It’s challenging for anyone to start and run a successful business – particularly in this economy. These women are setting the standard for innovation and creativity," said Janine Popick, founder and CEO of VerticalResponse.

StartupNation (www.startupnation.com) launched the first annual Leading Moms in Business Competition in January to recognize the achievements of mom entrepreneurs across the

US

. Winners were selected and ranked according to public votes accumulated from January through March, 2009. The elite 200 win bragging rights, promotional support, and digital winner’s emblems recognizing their achievements as the Leading Moms in Business.

Mary Beth Knight is very passionate about this business and it shows.  Knight says “I myself was overweight for most of my life.  At age 30 I quit smoking and started working out!  I lost 50 pounds and kept it off, until pregnancy!  I gained 50 pounds during both pregnancies and was afraid the weight would not come off.  I tried to find fitness that was specific to my needs and stage of motherhood, that allowed me to feel better, look better and keep my kids by my side, but I could not find it.  SO I DEVLEOPED IT MYSELF!  After losing weight 11 years ago, I made a career out of fitness, and during the first 4 years, of motherhood have developed more than 15 products to help moms feel great and bond with their children!”

StrollerFit and American Baby Faire

This weekend was the American Baby Faire at Reliant Center. Last year all of us instructors participated at the baby faire and we also did demos of our class formats. This year there were just a few of us able to attend the faire and we didn't do a demo but even still we manage to get a large list of moms interested in our classes that hopefully  will take advantage of our FREE WEEK offer and join. I brought along my youngest child Alisa she is 3 months old and had her in my maya wrap. She slept through most of the event and helped bring alot of business to our table.  It was a great turnout of folks about the same amount of traffic as last year and we had some large vendors attending which helped to bring in the crowd this year.
We look forward to next year and hope that it will be as successful as this past weekend was.

A reason you should try our Restore the Core Pilates Classes!

A restore the core member found this important article that I thought I'd share with you!

Why Functional Fitness Is So Important

When following an exercise plan, a common mistake that people make is focusing on cardio workouts but neglecting core and strength exercises. Unfortunately, weak core muscles and poor flexibility increase a person's chances of getting hurt. Even those who do conventional weight lifting may be vulnerable to injury, since this type of exercise tends to isolate muscle groups and train them in a manner that is not naturally functional. In other words, the workout does not mimic everyday activities, and it usually neglects the core muscles.
As a result, an increasing number of people are heading to their doctors with complaints characteristic of boomeritis: Lower back pain; rotator-cuff pain; hip, knee, wrist, ankle, and neck pain; tennis elbow; Achilles tendonitis; and shin splints are the most common ailments cited. The good news is that almost all of these are preventable.
In his South Beach Supercharged Fitness Program, Dr. Arthur Agatston, leading preventive cardiologist and author of The South Beach Diet Supercharged, places as much importance on core-strengthening exercises as he does on cardio conditioning. Here's why:
Functional core-strengthening exercises are similar to movements you execute in your daily life, and they require you to use several muscle groups in one fluid movement. A quality core-strengthening program will develop the muscles in the back, abdomen, pelvis, and hips, and promote stability, strength, and flexibility. For these reasons they are essential for preventing injury and therefore maintaining a healthy weight.
It's important to know that even if you're diligent about cardio workouts, you still need something more to further improve muscle tone and bone density. That's why, in addition to the cardio conditioning provided in the Interval Walking plan, the South Beach Supercharged Fitness Program emphasizes functional fitness in the program's Total Body Workout, which is designed to strengthen your core and peripheral muscles. This will help you maintain strength, good posture, and balance.
The core-functional exercises featured in the South Beach Supercharged Fitness Program don't require you to buy fancy equipment like balance boards and pulley-type machines or to join a gym in order to see results. In fact, you won't need more than a chair without arms or an exercise bench; a mat or thick towel to protect your back and knees during floor exercises; optional light hand weights; and an optional exercise step, also called an aerobic step or a home exercise workout step.

This article just confirms why everyone should try restore the core!
Classes are held at various location across Houston.
