Self-esteem boosters for new moms, a must!

Ask any first time mom if her introduction to motherhood went as planned and she will more than likely laugh out loud at the thought before the word “no” comes out of her mouth! The laugh stems from the fact that she can’t believe how different “real life motherhood” is from what she thought it would be. Gone are the fantasies of being that mom who always looks great, never a pound overweight, is a  fabulous fashionista, always perfectly accessorized, with salon perfect hair, flawless skin,  radiant smile and a few perfectly well behaved children in tow. What replaces those fading fantasies can often times be more than a new mom bargained for or deserves! In fact without a few important strategies, moms can get lost in motherhood and feel as if they are nothing more than a supplier of food, keeper of the peace, maid and housekeeper. Before we know it a year has gone by and our bodies still look like they did when our baby was 2 months old, even worse we no longer recognize, nor like what is looking back. Self –esteem is long gone and instead of being confident in ourselves we begin to question who we are and what we are doing. This is not a healthy path that we moms lead our families down, after all moms are the C.E.O’s of their families health and well being. Confidence and healthy habits are ours to instill in our children and all moms will tell you that you have to practice what you preach, if you want it to stick. Healthy habits produce healthy bodies and minds, both of which are necessary for healthy levels of confidence and self-esteem.  Proper care of our bodies is not limited to what we eat or how much we exercise, it is also dependant upon healthy routines with products that are good for us and for our environment.

It was a very hot summer so most of our classes were held indoors at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church Gymnasium and Memorial City Mall.

The latest happenings with the Houston StrollerFit team!

Moms I haven't done a very good job keeping our wonderful StrollerFit blog updated and there are lots of information to share with you! One of my goals this fall is to keep you abreast with all the latest and greatest going on with our Houston StrollerFit team.

StrollerFit West Houston is expanding! October 1st were adding classes at Bendwood Park Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. Click on Map . Calling all Memorial Mammas and West Houston Mammas join our classes this month and September and receive your first month FREE!

Some more news to share from the West Houston team, we have started a running group called West Houston Moms on seemommyrun.com.If you have a passion for running and would love to do 5ks, 10ks and even take the plunge next year to train for a half marathon what better way to train than with a group of fabulous moms!

Were planning to meet at Terry Hershey Park as a group early Saturday and even Sunday mornings and if possible plan to run as a group 2 days during the week or you can run on your own during the week but meet as a group on the weekends.

StrollerFit moms are getting healthier this summer with seafood!

Health and well-being shouldn’t take a vacation this summer, so lighten up your summertime meals with a few small changes, and those Bermuda shorts might be a little looser by Labor Day. Not only can healthier choices lead to lower body fat, decreasing our risk of heart disease, diabetes and a host of cancers, it can actually increase our brain power and strengthen our hearts, all with the power of seafood. Experts report that two servings of fish that are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids can reduce our risk of heart disease by 36%,.  Not reason enough to lighten-up? There’s more. DHA (an Omega 3) has been shown to slow the development of lesions on the brain which lead to Alzheimer’s disease. The brain and the body also benefit from an intake of seafood due to the mood lifting properties of Omega 3 fatty acids. In fact, some researchers believe Omega 3’s to be more powerful in reducing depression than some prescription drugs.  The health benefits of seafood are not limited to adults, positive effects on mood behavior and learning abilities have been seen in children with ADHD.

 

Happier and healthier are just two steps away this summer. Here are a few ideas to get you headed in the right direction. Switch-out that hamburger for a salmon burger, enjoy fish tacos with tilapia, cabbage and light ranch dressing, or let your little ones tear the lettuce while you prepare popcorn shrimp for a delicious summertime salad that’s anything but ordinary.
